Land ho! The ship’s first destination in the South Shetland Islands came into view earlier today. They’ll drop off a few researchers then continue on through the Gerlache Straits to Anvers Island, where the ship will leave James behind and continue on for a six week research cruise. James will start writing his posts after he hits land, but for now I’m relaying via San Francisco. It’s a bit harder to blog from the middle of the ocean!
The Gould will continue on for a six week research cruise. The gear on board is incredible!
This chart shows our route from the mainland down to our first stop at Livingston Island. We’ll then continue through the Gerlache Straits to Anvers Island.

Sunset in the Strait of Magellan.
One of the many labs aboard the ship.
Trying on an immersion suit aka “Gumby suit” during our safety drill. We also learned how to abandon ship, but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that!
A view into the bridge where I spend most of my time sighting whales during daylight hours.
